Help for Adults who Stammer

Stammering affects around 1% of the population.

By adulthood, people who stammer may have developed some strong negative thoughts and feelings about their speech and be avoiding saying certain words or some speaking situations.

You may feel that stammering is holding you back and is getting in the way socially and at work.

Initial meeting

We can meet to discuss how your stammer has developed over time, any strategies or therapy you have tried so far, the impact stammering is having on your life at the moment and what you might want to work on changing.

Therapy

In therapy, I use a person-centered approach, working in partnership with you. This ensures that therapy is tailored to suit your unique pattern of stammering and works towards the goals that you wish to achieve.

Therapy may include addressing the psychological and emotional aspects of stammering as well as working directly on speech. It can support you to:

• Change how you respond to your stammering
• Reduce avoidance
• Develop effective ways to manage stammering
• Increase fluency
• Develop self confidence in communicating.

In order to make change, you will need to actively engage with the therapy process and work on your speech between sessions.
